Dunkin’ Donuts opens in Quincy.

May 27, 1950

Founded by Dorchester native William Rosenberg, its first store is located in the former Copper Kettle Restaurant at 495 Southern Avenue in Quincy. The company’s first franchise store opens in Worcester (Dedham) in 1955, and its first Boston store opens on North Beacon Street in 1960. The company moves its headquarters to Randolph and Canton in 2004, changes its name to Dunkin’ in January 2018, and is purchased by Inspire Brands of Atlanta in 2020. The chain has 12,500 restaurants around the world, but Boston Globe reporter writes “Dunkin’ is part of our identity- almost our fifth sports team.”
